Great Balls of Fire

January 7, 2016 KWBBRH

Ferriday, Louisiana, in the Parish of Concordia (which is located in the northeastern portion of Louisiana), boasts to have produced more famous people per square mile than any other American small town. Home of the Delta Music Museum and steeped in the Delta Blues, Ferriday is the birthplace of Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee Lewis’s sister, Frankie Jean Lewis Terrell, personally gives tours of their childhood home. It can be found at 712 Louisiana Ave., Ferriday, LA 71334, behind the Pik Quick Drive Thru Liquor Store owned by Frankie Jean’s family. You drive through the liquor store and politely ask for the tour. The unassuming house opens into an inner Jerry Lee Lewis shrine where pictures, mementos, and instruments chronicle Jerry Lee Lewis’s musical childhood and adult life. Frankie Jean, accompanied always by her small dogs, is more than happy to serve as your tour guide. All she asks is for a small donation as you leave.

One online reviewer warns, “Bizarre, the place is a dump inside the twilight zone,” but another reviewer willing to get beyond the unorthodox and informal nature of the experience describes, “the whole thing is bizarre but wonderful.” The tour and meeting Frankie Jean is definitely worth the adventure.
